Money in politics is destroying our country. We would be fools to wait on Congress, or wait for a new Supreme Court, or even wait on state legislatures. Politicians will not vote away their gravy train-- not without immense and persistent public pressure.
What we need is a pressure point-- and people in the Big Sky state may have found that pressure point, just in time for the 2026 midterm elections.
The pressure point. What corporations can and can't do is defined at the state-level. Meaning, states can and always have had the power to disallow corporations from engaging in political spending. Now it's up to us to insist on state-wide anti-dark money laws.
How to get it done. This will have to be a citizen-led movement. There are 26 states (plus D.C.) that have the ballot initiative process. That's the approach Montanans are taking. Montana will likely be the first state with an anti-dark money initiative on their 2026 ballot. In the 24 states without the ballot initiative process, voters will need to pressure their state legislators.
The impact? Anonymous, untraceable money that has corrupted our elections for too long would be outlawed-- for all the states that enact this anti-dark money law.
